Plot Summary

Donnie is drawn from his room upon hearing the voice of Frank, a 6-foot tall demonic-looking bunny rabbit thus escaping death as the engine from a jet plane crashes into the Darko house crushing Donnie's bedroom. Donnie is led from the house where Frank informs Donnie that the world will end in exactly 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. It is later learned that because Donnie had escaped his fate, an unstable tangent universe has been created which will cause the end of the world.

Donnie is constantly visited by visions of Frank the rabbit who causes him to execute various acts of vandalism such as burning down the house of Jim Cunningham, the motivational speaker, flooding the school, or speaking out and causing tensions between him and his family, teachers, and peers to grow. Amidst all of the problems, Donnie catches the eye of the new girl, Gretchen, who agrees to be his girlfriend. Along with Gretchen, Donnie explores the idea of wormholes and alternate universes by reading a book written by the old woman who lives down the street.

It is only when Gretchen gets run over and killed by a car driven by Frank, actually a teenager wearing the rabbit suit as a costume, that Donnie realizes that he must go back in time and close the wormhole. By not leaving the house before the engine crashes into his room, Donnie is killed thus eliminating the tangent universe. By sacrificing himself to restore order he allows the world to continue on in its correct course and enables Gretchen to live.
